Our spring competition pizza

For the last couple of months, all over the country, our pizzaioli have been putting their creativity to the test for our Spring/Summer chef competition. The finalists were:

Nicola from Chiswick

Adria from Bermondsey

Nino from Earls Court 

Antonio from Belsize Park 

Pasquale from Bristol

Antonio from Soho

We’re proud to announce the 1st place winner is Antonio, Head Pizzaiolo at Belsize Park.

Franco Manca chef competition winner

Antonio’s winning pizza will be on the specials board at your local Franco Manca between 30th April to 6th May, and 14th -20th May, with a percentage of the profits going to Antonio.

It features a mouthwatering mix of small-producer Italian and English ingredients. Our traditional slow-rise sourdough is topped with a mixed pepper base, Somerset mozzarella and Yorkshire fennel sausage, all balanced with red onion and fresh basil.

Our second winner was Gaetano Forino, Head Pizzaioli at Earl’s Court. His pizza will be on the specials board at all pizzerias between 7th – 13th May, and 21st – 27th May.

It’s got free range spicy N’duja from Calabria, roasted aubergine, mozzarella and fresh basil on a butternut squash base.

Our pizzaioli are a vital part of what makes Franco Manca pizza what it is, and this was a great chance for them to come together, share their creativity and make their mark on the Franco Manca menu.

Our spring/summer pizzaiolo competition was judged by Franco Manca executive chef Alfonso Marseglia, masterchef Davide D’Auria, and members of the Franco Manca central team. Davide said, ‘At Franco Manca the chefs are the heart and soul of the company. It’s great to see them realising innovative ideas for a new menu.’

Of the entrants he said, ‘I saw a lot of great veg combinations, like lemon zest and courgettes, and bell peppers, cream and black olive pate, as well as more substantial toppings like Antonio’s where meats were the main protagonist. Across them all they had in common the freshness of their topping, and the passion of the chefs.’

Antonio beat chefs from Chiswick, Bermondsey, Bristol and Soho, with Nino from Earls Court coming in second. Davide said Antonio’s recipe was “the perfect balance between Italian and British ingredients, combining tradition with innovation”.

Antonio’s pizza will be on the specials board at your local Franco Manca from Tuesday 30th April – Monday 6th May, and 14th May – 20th May. Gaetano’s pizza will be on the specials board from 7th -13th May and 21st to 27th May.

On the day, we also held a Franco Manca Trivia competition, of which the winner was Antonio from Belize Park.
